 The Drostdy museum complex at the eastern end of town was built in 1747 for the magistrate's residence and also served as court and prison.
The museum displayes an exceptionally beautiful collection of furniture from the 18th and 19th century, including kitchen equipment, horse  carriages etc. An extensive photo and picture collection illustrates the history of Swellendam. The Drostdy Museum lies in Swellengrebel Street. It is open mondays to fridays from 9 to 5. Tel 028-5141138.
Golf players will appreciate the 9-hole golf course in Swellendam with its inspiring view of the Langeberg. The greenfees are low, and this course is obviously much less busy than Cape Town courses.
 Swellendam makes not only an ideal stopover, but is, due to its central position, also a good base for tours to the surrounding nature reserves De Hoop, Bontebok National Park or Marloth Nature Reserve on the slopes of the Langeberg. This nature conservation area offers excellent hiking trails, ranging from day hikes to an 81 km trail. More information to be obtained from the Conservation Officer under Tel 028-5141410.
A trip to Montagu in the Klein Karoo is worthwhile, To get there, best take the scenic Tradouw Pass.
