 The town employs a "Whale Crier". He walks around and blows a sort of morse code into his kelp horn whenever a whale is sighted. The decrypting information is written on a large signboard that hangs from his neck.
The whale season starts in July. In the first week of October the annual Whale Festival takes place in Hermanus. Then it gets very hectic and crowded in town and it is difficult to find accommodation.
At the old harbour there is an interesting little fisheries museum. The best beaches can be found in the suburb of Voelklip.
The nostalgic village of Stanford is well worth the detour. It lies on the road to Gansbaai, some 10 kms northeast of Hermanus. Time seems to be standing still here. There are many lovingly restored Victorian buildings, cosy little restaurants and pubs.
