Rosebank
Art lovers should not miss the Irma Stern Museum, corner of Cecil and Chapel Roads, which is under the curatorship of UCT. Irma Stern (1894 to 1966) is South Africa's most famous painter. After her studies at the Art Academy in Weimar (Germany) she returned in 1919 to Cape Town. Irma Stern painted in different styles, but eventually became the founder of the "African Impressionism". Her works were regarded as avantgarde by the conservative art scene of South Africa.
Irma Stern spent the rest of her life in this house, which was made a museum in 1971. In addition to her paintings, there are numerous sculptures from various African countries on show, which she had collected on her journeys. You can access the museum via the M3. At Mostert's Mill you turn left and follow the sign-posts. Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 5. Entrance fee is R5. Tel 021-6855686.
Observatory
The Observatory is open for visitors every 2nd Saturday of each month for a 2 hour presentation. Tel 021-4470025.
