The Cederberg Wilderness was proclaimed a Nature Conservation area in 1973. The 71 000 hectare reserve stretches from the Middelberg Pass near Citrusdal to the north up to the Pakhuis Pass near Clanwilliam. The conservation area consists of a fascinating rugged mountain landscape with Fynbos vegetation and spectacular sandstone formations like the "Maltese Cross" or the "Wolfberg Arch". The area is a paradise for the mountaineer, hiker and nature enthusiasts. For campers, the Algeria Forest Station under Cape Nature Conservation, some 40 kms north of Citrusdal, is strongly recommended. The camp and caravan ground has 46 stands at the banks of the Rondegat river. The shady terrain in idyllic forest surroundings makes an ideal base for hikes in the area. However there are o shopping or electrical facilities available. Barbecue facilities, firewood for sale. Bookings through:Private Bag X6; Clanwilliam 8135 Tel: (027) 482-2812; Fax: (027) 482-2406 email: cederberg@cnc.org.za |
