One doesn't really need much experience and courage to travel South Africa on one's own. The roads are good, nice hotels and guest houses can be found all over the country; the people are friendly and helpful. A car can be hired in Europe or comfortably via the Internet. Some operators also provide their guests with hotel vouchers and route descriptions for a "self-drive tour".
Four-wheel drives are not necessary in South Africa, but they can be useful in certain areas like the Kalahari or northern KwaZulu-Natal. The elevated position of the seats has some advantages when you go on a game drive, of course. 4x4's are also offered with roof tents and camping equipment.
Travellers who don't enjoy driving themselves, should join a tour group with a knowledgable guide. There are many excellent tour companies available. Many tour operators offer individually planned tours and safaris accommodating the client's wishes and preferences.
