All in all, accommodation and service in the Golden Gate National Park are quite basic. One can stay much more pleasantly in B&Bs and guest houses in nearby Clarens. The well kept little highlands village at the foot of the Rooiberg and Maluti Mountains has only 300 inhabitants and calls itself the "Jewel of the Free State". And justly so, because many artists, painters, musicians and arts&crafts people have settled in Clarens and given it a flair. The streets are seamed by art galleries, curio shops, restaurants and coffeeshops. The museum shows interesting photos and documents about the history of the settlement, which was named after the town in Switzerland, where President Paul Kruger died in exile in 1904.
