The shortest link between Port Elizabeth and Durban is the N2 that runs parallel to the coast of the Indian Ocean. It leads via Umtata through the green hills of the former Transkei, the former homeland of the Xhosas.
Accommodation and service offers are limited between Komga and Kokstad. The road through the former Transkei is usually in good condition, but one has to watch out for goats or cattle crossing over. A detour to the beautiful Wild Coast is recommended, especially to Coffee Bay or Port St. Johns. In Coffee Bay there is a highly recommended resort hotel. The access road is tarred.
There is a wide range of excellent accommodation at the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal, in particular between Amanzimtoti and Port Edward.
Alternative routes to KwaZulu Natal are the N10 via Bloemfontein and the N6 via Aliwal North, Ficksburg and Bethlehem through the highland region of the Free State (East London - Bloemfontein).
