Johannesburg - Durban

The route from Johannesburg to Durban on the National Road N3 is the main link between the densely populated province of Gauteng in the north-eastern part of South Africa and the province of KwaZulu Natal at the Indian Ocean. Especially during the holiday season the road is heavily travelled.

The route runs from Harrismith along the mighty Drakensberg massif of KwaZulu Natal. Here, the most important highland parks of South Africa can be found, above all the spectacular Royal Natal National Park. The best access route leads on the R616 at Ladysmith past Bergville.

Those who love a softly undulating landscape, trout lakes, arts and crafts and a relaxed way of living, should leave the freeway at Howick and travel the R103 towards Nottingham Road. This "Midlands Meander" route boasts numerous cosy guest houses and B&B's.

Near Harrismith is the N5 turn-off to Bloemfontein via Bethlehem. It is a very scenic route which leads through the highlands of the Free State province.
