The route from Cape Town to Bloemfontein on the National Road N1 is part of the most important and the fastest connection between the Cape and Johannesburg. That is why you will encounter relatively high traffic when travelling this route through central South Africa.
Continuation: Bloemfontein - Johannesburg
Starting in Cape Town, the N1 first leads through the beautiful Cape Winelands, and detours to Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are recommended. After leaving Paarl, the road inclines steeply and after passing the Huguenot Tunnel (toll road) the first mountain ranges of the South African escarpment lie behind you.
After leaving Worcester in the Breede River Valley the road leads through the arid South African highveld, called the "Karoo". The Karoo National Park near Beaufort-West renders insight into the special flora and fauna of this region. If you have more time, take a trip to Prince Albert, an authentic Karoo village surrounded by dramatic nature and with excellent accommodation.
A gravel road leads via the spectacular Swartberg Pass to the Cango Caves in the Schoemanshoek Valley near Oudtshoorn and from there to the Garden Route. If you prefer tarred roads, take the N12 instead.
