The N1 between Pretoria, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein offers - besides the cities themselves - only a few highlights.

North of Winburg, the Willem Pretorius Game Reserve in the Free State is a worthwhile stop-over. This small game reserve lies at the Allemanskraal dam and offers a good game stock (rhinos, buffaloes and giraffes amongst others). There is very nice accommodation available in chalets overlooking the dam.

Big Hole in Kimberley The N12 via Kimberley is an interesting alternative route. It leads through typical Free State communities. The road is in very good condition as well, yet less travelled than the N1.

Kimberley is the centre of diamond mining in South Africa. The town with the "Big Hole" offers numerous attractions to the visitor. Accommodation of any type is available.
