Union Buildings
South Africa's most prominent building - seat of the government and the presidency - may for security reasons not be visited inside. But it is worthwhile to see it from the outside. Standing in front of the building you will enjoy a wonderful view of the city of Pretoria/Tshwane lying in the valley below. The Union Buildings are surrounded on all sides by magnificent gardens. Kruger House
President Paul Kruger lived in this splendid house near Church Square from 1884 to 1901. It was the first Pretorian residence with electricity and telephone. It is furnished in the original style and shows many exhibits from the life of this very popular Boer president, for example his State coach and his private railway carrier. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pretoria Art Museum
Art lovers come to their own in the Pretoria Art Museum in the central suburb of
Arcadia in Schoeman Street (corner Wessels St). The house was founded in 1964 and nowadays displays more than 6000 objects - paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographies, mostly by South African artists. The museum is open tuesdays to sundays from 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Small entrance fee. Tel. 012 3441807. art.museum@tshwane.gov.za


National Cultural History Museum
South Africa's most important museum for cultural history is situated in Visagie Street in Sunnyside near the Zoo. Very interesting are the ethnological department and the collection of prehistoric rockpaintings. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tel. 012 324-6082

Transvaal Museum
of Natural History
The museum lies in Paul Kruger Street near Church Square. Ea Fine collections of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects and fossils. Precious and semiprecious stones. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Small entrance fee. Tel. 012 3227632.

National Zoological Garden
Pretoria boasts the biggest zoo in South Africa and one of the biggest in the world. It lies in Boom Street in central Pretoria. More than 700 species on 300 hectares. It also houses an aquarium and a snake and reptile park. The zoo is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Entrance fee: R 32 for adults and R 19 for children. Tel.: 012 3283265. Email zoologic@cis.co.za

National Botanical Garden
Pretoria's botanical garden are situated 8 kilometres east of the city centre on Cussonia Avenue in the suburb of Brummeria. On an area of 76 hectares, the park renders an excellent insight into the diversity of the South African flora in the different climate zones. Particularly impressive is the comprehensive Herbarium and the Succulents' Garden. There are a visitor centre and a tea garden. Open daily. Tel. 012 8043166.

Melrose House
This building dates back to the year 1884 is one of the most beautiful example of Victorian houses in South Africa. In 1902 the peace treaty of Vereeniging, which ended the Anglo-Boer War, was signed here. Today the museum displays original English furniture from the 19th century as well as porcelaine and other accessories of that time. Address: 275 Jacob Maré Street. Open tuesdays to sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tel. 012 3222805.
Voortrekker Monument
This "place of pilgrimage" of the Afrikaans population lies on a hill outside of Pretoria. The monument was built in 1949 in remembrance of the Great Trek and the Bloedriver Battle. If you are coming from Johannesburg on the N1, you cannot miss it. Open daily.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve
There is quite a number of nature parks near the city. One of the largest urban nature reserves is the Rietvlei with its 3800 hectares. It lies some 35 kilometres south of Pretoria, still within the town boundaries, close to the N1 between Pretoria and the JHB International Airport (sign-posted off-ramp Rietvlei Dam). Rietvlei is home to an amazing variety of African game, rhino and cheetah amongst it. Open daily from 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tel. 012 3452274.
