The north-east of South Africa used to be called Transvaal and is nowadays divided into several provinces. The metropolitan area of Johannesburg and the South African capital of Pretoria form the Province of Gauteng. The area is small, but it is the economic powercentre of the country.

The province east of Gauteng is called Mpumalanga. It stretches to the border with Swaziland and Mozambique, and the southern part of the Kruger Park is part of this province.

In the north the Limpopo Province reaches up to the borders with Botswana and Zimbabwe which are marked by the Limpopo river. The northern half of the Kruger Park belongs to Limpopo.

West of Gauteng lies the North-West Province - formerly Bophutatswana - with the Pilanesberg National Park and Sun City as the highlights.

Because of the favourable flight connections, Johannesburg is the starting point for most visitors to South Africa. The north-east has a lot to offer the tourist. First of all, of course, is the vast Kruger National Park which presents in an area of 20,000 square kilometres almost the entire fauna of Africa.

A drive from Johannesburg to the Kurger National Park through the Mpumalanga Drakensberg region reveals to the visitor the scenic beauty of South Africa, the highlight being the Panorama Route and the Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga.
