Travel hints for Walvis Bay

A permit is needed for the visit to Sandwich Harbour. It is available at the petrol stations of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Also required is a 4x4 vehicle.

Camping in Sandwich Harbour is not permitted. Angling is forbidden from the 25th of January to the 15th of April.

Before you get to the sandy stretch of the road to Sandwich Harbour, your vehicle must be put into fourwheel mode. The wheel hubs at the front wheels must be in 4WD mode. If you are not experienced with 4x4's, let the car rental people explain it to you. You should also reduce the pressure on all tyres considerably. The tyres must be soft and broad to reduce the risk of getting stuck in the sand. Use exclusively lower gears, keep the revs high and try to stay in the main lane at all time, once you have reached the soft sand stretches.
