Travel Advice for the Kaokoland
|
The Kaokoland tourism has a negative effect on the culture and traditional way of life of the Himbas. Don't give begging children or adults any sweets or other things that are alien to their culture.
In Kaokoland there is no accommodation available and you must camp in the wild. There are no petrol stations or other services in Kaokoland, with the exception of the hamlet of Opuwo at the margin of the Kaokoveld where there are limited supplies available. Before you enter this remote area, you should have acquired enough water, groceries and petrol. The vehicle must be in a good condition.
Only 4WD vehicles may enter the Kaokoveld. Talk to the car rental person, before you start your trip through the adventurous Kaokoveld. You need to have 2 (good) spare tyres, petrol containers, tools, a good lifting jack and an airpump. Expect having to change a tyre in the Kaokoveld and let someone explain to you where on your car to apply the jack. Get reliable maps. Get instruction how to drive the 4x4 in four wheel mode under offroad conditions. If possible, get a vehicle with diff locks. Don't consider a Kaokoveld trip, when it has been raining there.
