There is one exciting thing to discover in Grootfontein: The largest meteorite ever found lies on the grounds of the "Hoba" farm near the town. It weighs more than 50 tons, has a volume of 9 cubic metres and hit the ground about 80,000 years ago.
The Hoba meteorite is made up of 82% iron, 16% nickel and 1% cobalt as well as various trace elements. The meteorite has become a little smaller during the past few years, as visitors have repeatedly broken off pieces of rock and taken them along as souvenirs, which, by the way, is strictly prohibited.

Grootfontein lies at Namibia's National Road B8, which leads from Windhoek to the Caprivi Strip. The small place with about 8000 inhabitants renders itself as a perfect rest place or overnight stay. The town runs a good restcamp with caravan park and affordable chalets. You can freshen up in the municipal swimming pool right next to it.
