Namib Desert

The small place Aus lies on the Namibian National Road B4 which connects Luederitz and Keetmanshoop, one of the most scenic routes in Namibia. West of Aus starts the dune part of the Namib desert, where one can often come across a large herd of wild horses. pan>

At the signposted Garub waterhole a roofed observation stand has been put up by conservationists, from where one can closely view the extraordinary animals which have adapted to the extreme desert conditions. Nobody knows exactly where the wild horses originate. But they are supposedly descendents of the horses of the German Schutztruppe.

The road to Lüderitz will take you right across the shifting sand dunes of the Namib desert. The air is sometimes full of sand and the road covered with sand. Small dunes, blocking the way, have to be carefully driven around.
