Travel Information Richtersveld

Access
Travel on the N7 to Steinkopf and from there to Port Nolloth and Alexander Bay. From Alexander Bay a gravel road goes all along the Orange River to Sendelingsdrift / Reuning (94 km), where the Park Office is. Other access routes: Kuboes, Lekkersing and Eksteenfontein. 4x4 can also take the road from Vioolsdrift to Eksteenfontein and through the Helskloof Reserve.

Driving in the Park
The Richtersveld National Park provides a genuine offroad adventure and can only be travelled by 4x4. Particularly difficult are some riverbeds with soft sand and the rocky mountain passes. You should drive in a convoy. Drivers of single vehicles have to check out at the park office when they leave. One must get to the campsites before dark. (before 16:00 one must be at the park office). Night drives are not permitted.

Accommodation and Camping
The park offers nowadays a couple of restcamps with camping facilities and basic self-catering accommodation.

In Sendelingsdrift - on the western border at the entrance to the park - a new restcamp was built. At present there is a total of 10 self-catering chalets with 2 to 6 beds, shower, air-conditioning, fridge, stove and a verandah with view of the Orange River. Campground and swimming pool.

The restcamps Tatasberg and Ganakouriep Wilderness Camps also offer - besides camping - chalets for an overnight stay. But they are not air-conditioned and are very basic. They have 2 beds and a shower.

The other restcamps, Potjiespram, De Hoop (very beautifully positioned at the Oranje), Richtersberg, Kokerboomkloof, Hiking Trails Base Camp are open for camping only. Caravans are not allowed. One shouldn't sleep on the bare ground because of the many scorpions.

Service Facilities
There is no shop in the park. Visitors must bring their own water, firewood and groceries. It is advisable to do the shopping in Alexander Bay. Sendelingsdrift only has a small general store offering basic foodstuff and drinks. And one can fill the petrol tank. Open only on weekdays!

No cellphone reception in the entire park. There is a coin-operated telephone in Sendelingsdrift. The park's office is open daily from 8 am to 4 pm.
