Umhlanga Rocks (pronounciation: umshlanga) lies 20 kms north of Durban. Extensive, wide and well-protected sandy beaches are the attraction of this elegant seaside suburb. Luxurious hotels and apartment blocks are densely stringed all along the beachfront. At the O'Conner Promenade one can go for a leisurely walk along the sea and enjoy the view - from Durban View Park in the south past the Umhlanga Lighthouse in front of the old and famous Oyster Box Hotel to the Breakers Resort in the north. Here begins the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. Hiking trails and pathways lead through dense subtropical coastal forests all around the Umhlanga Lagoon, with many monkeys, bushbucks and numerous birds.
For an entertaining shopping trip the "Gateway Theatre of Shopping", be recommended, one of the biggest shopping centres of South Africa. Besides a great number of shops and restaurants it offers a surfing facility with artificial waves and an indoor climbing wall, a skateboard park plus many other entertainment options.
Umhlanga hosts the Natal Sharks Board. This organisation monitors the coast of KwaZulu-Natal and maintains the shark nets that protect the swimming beaches from Port Edward in the south to Zinkwazi in the north. At the Visitors' Centre one can learn everything about sharks and their habits as well as the shark nets, their advantages and disadvantages. Several times per week one can watch dissections of sharks which got caught in the nets and died.
In the neighbouring holiday village of Umdloti - on the lagoon of the Umdloti river mouth - life is more quiet. The apartment blocks and holiday houses are smaller and the beautiful wide beaches less frequented. Umdloti is an ideal holiday village for a peaceful beach holiday.
