Underberg / Himeville  The little town of Underberg on the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg has about 1500 inhabitants and serves as a supply centre for the surrounding farms. It has a supermarket and one should stock up here before driving on into the nature oarks of the Southern Berg.Neighbouring Himeville - just 6 kilometres from Underberg - is smaller and offers hardly any shops. But it has a little museum for local history - housed in an old fort - and a popular pub, the "Himeville Arms", where one can also get an evening meal. Kamberg Nature Reserve  The reserve lies on a river with several lakes and is a paradise for trout anglers. The Rock Art Centre with Bushman (San) paintings offers a 2- to 3-hour guided hike to the Game Pass shelter, where San used to live. Highly informative! And the fees benefit the San community. Kamberg has a couple of chalets. The park is open in summer from 5 am to 7 pm and in winter from 6 am to 6 pm. Access from Nottingham Road. Tel (033) 2677312.Highmoor Nature Reserve  The park is about 15,000 hectares in size and mainly of interest for trout anglers. It offers a basic campground. Gate open from 6 am to 6 pm. Access from Rosetta. Tel: (033) 2677240.Vergelegen Nature Reserve Stunning position in front of the backdrop of the Thabana Ntlenyana mountain peak in Lesotho (highest peak south of the Kilimanjaro). Hiking trails. Gate open from 6 am to 6 pm. Accommodation in a basic campground. Access from Himeville. Tel (033) 7020712. |

| Cobham State Forest 52,000 hectare park. Many rivers and lakes. Beautiful hiking trails. Popular are the Pholela River Trail (15 km) and the Troutbeck Loop Trail (7 km). Gate open from 6 am to 6 pm. Only accommodation a campground. Tel: (033) 7020831. Lotheni Nature Reserve  Superbly beautiful position at the Lotheni river. Trout fishing. Stunning hiking trails. Popular are the Emandundwini Trail (12 km), the Eagle Trail (13 km) and the Gelib Tree Mountain Bike Trail (8 km). Accommodation: self-catering chalets and cottages. And a campground in fabulous position. The park is open in summer from 5 am to 7 pm and in winter from 6 am to 6 pm. Tel (033) 7020540.Garden Castle 35,000 hectares. Spectacular landscape against the backdrop of the Rhino Peak. The "Rhino Peak Hike" starts at an altitude of 1840 metres and leads to the peak at 3051 metres. Campground. Access from Underberg.
