Durban's biggest attraction is the new uShaka Marine World complex. The centre piece this funpark is the Sea World Aquarium. 500 metres of themed viewing tanks were built into a reconstructed steam freighter wreck, which sank in 1920. They display the fascinating marine life of South Africa's east coast. Sharks are an important part of it: Nowhere else on the southern hemisphere a more comprehensive collection of these fearsome marine predators can be found. uShaka also comprises a dolphin stadium, with 1200 seats one of the biggest in the world, a penguin rookery and a huge seal pool. The renowned Oceanographic Research Institute is also hosted at uShaka Marine World.
uShaka Sea World offers different performances several times every day, like dolphin and seal training, penguin feed, shark feed, coral garden presentation, turtle lagoon feed and touch pools manned.
The adjacent uShaka Wet 'n Wild is meant for the swimming enthusiasts. There are waterslides of enormous dimensions and many fresh water pools. Swim with the sea creatures in the snorkel lagoon.
At uShaka Beach, right in front of uShaka Marine World, various activities are being offered like windsurfing, kayaking, volley ball, kite surfing, jet ski boats and many more. And at uShaka Village Walk one can have a good meal or just a bite. Besides the spectacular Shark Restaurant, there are a couple of fast food outlets, as well as boutiques, jewellery and curio shops.
Open Mondays to Thurdays from 9 to 18 and Fridays to Sundays from 9 to 18. The Snorkel lagoon is closed Mondays. Tel 031 3288000. Fax 031 3288090.
