Margate and Ramsgate belong to the most popular beach resorts on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, attracting, however, different groups of holiday makers. They are lying next to each other and offer golden beaches of the best quality.
Margate is the bigger one of the two and offers big bustle, hustle and entertainment for - mainly - young people, with numerous restaurants and snack bars, pubs, a couple of discotheques, a casino and an amusement park with waterslide. Good shopping facilities.
The smaller Ramsgate is more tranquil and serene. The beach is one of the best for swimming in South Africa. It has Blue Flag status. There is also a tidal pool. On the Blue Lagoon - right behind the beach - one can do canooing or take a pedal boat. North of the lagoon a piece of the original dense subtropical coastal forest, the "Tanglewood", is preserved. A couple of sculptures from local artists were placed in its shade. The winding path through the forest along the lagoon ends at the Waffle House restaurant, where delicious Belgian waffles and other dishes are served.
