The coast north of the metropolitan area of Durban - between Ballito and the Tugela River mouth - is called "North Coast". Because of the many dolphins, frequently frollicking off this part of the shore in pursuit of the sardine shoals, this coast is also called "Dolphin Coast".
The North Coast is a string of holiday resorts with wonderful beaches, the most prominent ones being Tongaat Beach, Ballito, Willard Beach, Shaka's Rock, Salt Rock, Sheffield Beach, Umhlali, Blythedale and Zinkwazi Beach. They all lie within easy reach of Durban along the N2 toll road or the parallel running R102 road.
