So it happened, and in the following years the situation in Kokstad stabilised. With the arrival of affluent white settlers the town experienced even more of an upswing. In 1874, even a hotel was opened by an Afro-American who eventually also started the local newspaper.
Today, Kokstad has about 45,000 inhabitants and makes a friendly and clean impression. The town is picturesquely situated in a valley 1,300 metres above sea-level in front of the backdrop of Mount Currie, 2,200 metres high, and the Ingeli mountains.
In the centre of town there are several historical buildings like the Old Town Hall or the Kokstad Museum, both in Main Street. Visible from far is the town's landmark, St. Patrick Catholic Cathedral, with its double towers, built in 1884.
Kokstad supplies the surrounding farming area, where mainly cattle and sheep breeding and dairy production is done. And the town also lives on trade with the former Transkei.
