The Southern Drakensberg lies a bit off the main tourism routes. Here the mountain world is more rugged, less forested than in the Northern Drakensberg. At medium altitude there are wide grass-covered slopes and along the rivers rests of the evergreen mountainous rainforest, which is indigenous here and used to cover vast parts of the area.
The nature lover finds in the Southern Drakensberg, which is part of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, alpine landscapes of dramatic beauty, a mountainous flora and fauna with a huge diversity of species and basically unlimited hiking routes. Very popular are the foothills of the "Southern Berg" with trout anglers, fly-fishers in particular, because the region boasts crystal-clear lakes and rivers.
There are several nature and game reserves in the Southern Drakensberg, like the Highmoor Nature Reserve in the north, the Kamberg Nature Reserve, the Mkhomazi Wilderness Area, the Lotheni Nature Reserve, and the Vergelegen Nature Reserve, Cobham State Forest, Mzimkhulu Wilderness Area and the Garden Castle Game Reserve in the south.
The best base for travelling the Southern Drakensberg are the holiday places Underberg and Himeville. Both villages lie on the foothills of the highland at an altitude of about 1500 metres. From Himeville the neighbouring country of Lesotho is accessible via the Sani Pass, which is spectacular and - to the delight of 4x4 enthusiasts - very difficult to negotiate.
