Like everywhere else in the Midlands, Balgowan has quite a few wealthy farmers, who are usually in the timber production industry (pine and eucalyptus) or in dairy and cattle farming. A good number of cosy country lodges and many excellent restaurants grant a relaxing holiday in idyllic surroundings.

Balgowan
Midlands Meander
The Midlands Meander Route - R 101 - goes through Balgowan in the heart of the Natal Midlands. Balgowan is not much more than a romantic old trading store and a train station where the local timber is picked up. But there is something special about the village: Michaelhouse is the boarding school for boys with the best reputation in South Africa. Anyone boy who attends school here, meets the standards for belonging to the elite of the country one day. The huge complex, built in the English brick gothic style, includes a beautiful and spacious chapel which is open to the public.
