St. Lucia is the tourist centre of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (previously St. Lucia Wetland Park). The little town lies at the mouth of Lake St. Lucia on a narrow spit of land between the St. Lucia Estuary in the west and the Indian Ocean in the east.
Subtropical climate, wonderful, wide beaches, the world's highest vegetated dunes, hippos, crocodiles and an enormous variety of birds, excellent angling spots at the lagoon and at the sea, hiking trails, a lot of accommodation for any budget, restaurants and pubs, supermarkets, boat rentals and tour operators - all this makes St. Lucia the most popular holiday place at the Elephant Coast.
Boats leave several times a day from the jetties for tours through the estuary of St. Lucia. The participants gain a good insight into the diversity of this unique wetland habitat with its enormous wealth of plants and animals. On these trips the boats get very close to the hippo groups and one can watch these fascinating, yet highly dangerous giants at close range and take photos of them. In the evenings one often encounters hippos sauntering through the gardens of hotels with lake frontage and even in St. Lucia Main Road at times. One can also spot crocodiles frequently at the lake. To observe them closely, visit the Crocodile Centre north of the town centre. Right next to it is the entrance of the Mfabeni Wildlife Reserve. This 30,000 hectare nature reserve is home to not only hippos and crocodiles, but also buffaloes and elephants. The park offers excellent hikes of a couple of days' length.
