Golden Mile Beaches

Attractions and Travel Hints

Durban's Golden Mile Beaches
The - especially with surfers very popular - beaches along the Golden Mile are monitored from 8 am to 5 pm by lifesavers, but only in the stretches marked by red-yellow flags. And they are protected by shark nets.

The different sections of the Golden Mile beaches have different names, which are, from north to south: Dunes, North Beach, Dairy Beach, Wedge Beach, South Beach and Addington Beach. The last one has relatively quiet and small waves and is ideally suited for surfing beginners.

Time Warp Surfing Museum
Im Ocean Sports Centre on Dairy Beach lies a little Surfing Museum, founded by South Africa's surfing pioneer Baron Stander.

Shows Durban en miniature, at least the most prominent buildings. Corner of Lower Marine Parade and Snell Parade.

Fitzsimons Snake Park
Displays various South African and other snakes. Presentations and feeding times from 10 am to 3 pm. Lower Marine Parade. Tel: 073 156 9606.

North of the Golden Mile
There are also interesting beaches north of the Golden Mile. They are called Country Club Beach (golf course), Tekwini Beach and Laguna Beach. And at the Umgeni River mouth lies the Blue Lagoon Beach, Durban's most popular fishing beach.

Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve
On the northern banks of the Umgeni river lies the La Lucia and Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve. It is a protected swamp area with mangroves and an extraordinary number of bird species. Hiking trails lead through the reserve.
