The central part of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park – in short called "Central Berg" – is crowned by several impressive 3000-metre peaks like "Cathedral Peak" (3004 m), "Windsor Castle" (3065 m), "Cathkin Peak" (3148 m), "Monk's Cowl" (3229 m) and - towering above all others - the 3374 m high "Champagne Castle". "Giant's Castle" (3314 m), situated a bit further south, also belongs to the Central Berg.
Die Central Drakensberg Region is a paradise for mountaineers, hikers and nature lovers. There are a couple of nature parks of considerable size and great beauty. Most of them lie close to the mountain peaks and can be reached from Winterton.
In the north lies the Cathedral Peak Nature Reserve. It comprises 32,000 hectares of dramatically beautiful mountain world and offers – besides challenges for serious mountaineers – hiking trails of medium difficulty with overnight facilities in caves. In the Didima Valley one can see an extraordinairy variety of Bushman paintings.
The 22,000 hectare Monk's Cowl Reserve in the Mdedelo Wilderness Area is ideal for hiking as well. The nature park has a picturesque position, with the backdrop of Champagne Castle, Cathkin Peak and Monk's Cowl behind them. Stunning views, eagles circling the skies, mountain pastures covered in flowers, roaring waterfalls and crystal-clear mountain streams and rivers to swim in make a visit to this highland park a special experience.
