Access
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (previously called Kalahari Gemsbok National Park) lies 904 kilometres from Johannesburg and 260 kilometres from Upington. Approaching via Upington, the last 60 kilometres are untarred. Those coming from Johannesburg, can also take the route via Kuruman, Hotazel and Vanzylsrus. The last 300 kilometres are gravel or sand road.
If you are coming from Namibia, cross the border at Rietfontein and approach the park from the south. There is no access in the north (no entry at Mata Mata).
One normally heads for the camp Twee Rivieren in the south of the park first. Here is the park entrance as well. The camp has a petrol station, workshop, shop, restaurant, visitor centre and swimming pool.
For the drive to the other camps in the park - Mata Mata and Nossob - one must plan half a day, because there is a speed limit of 30 km/h in the park.
Access to the Botswana part of the park is across the Gemsbok/Bokspits border post, 60 km south of Twee Rivieren. The park entrance is in Two Rivers. A separate permit is required. Booking address further below. For the Botswana part a four-wheel drive is necessary.
Restcamps
The chalets in Twee Rivieren are very comfortable. They either have one or two bedrooms. Fully eqipped kitchen, bath, air-conditioning (switched off at night). Mata Mata and Nossob have bungalows with 6 beds, kitchen and bath. Also basic three-bed huts without kitchen, bath or air-condition. In addition, in all the three restcamps good and mostly shady camping spots are available, without elecricity, though.
In the Botswana part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park there are only very basically eqipped camping grounds. They are called Rooiputs, Two Rivers and Polentswa. Each camping ground only admits seven vehicles.
Early booking of accommodation is required. Particularly for the holidays, the park is often fully booked long in advance. Bookings for the South Africa part:
