George
Garden Route

George Visitor Information

George is located on the foothills of the Outeniqua mountains, 8 kilometres from the coast. The town was already founded in 1810. With its population of almost 70.000 George is the commercial centre of the Garden Route today.

Golf
George boasts Fancourt, Africa's award winning Top Golf Resort, having won all the major resort awards for the last three years. It has four fine courses. You do not necessarily have to reside at the Resort to play golf at Fancourt. The new "Bramble Hill" course is open to all golfers. The area has many excellent guest houses, B&Bs and restaurants.

Outeniqua Choo Choo
The historical Outeniqua Choo Choo steam train starts in George and tickets can be bought right at the station (75 Rand single and 90 Rand return). There are two departures every day, departing George at 9.30 am and 2 pm. The trip lasts about 3 hours. Knysna departures: 9:45 am 2:15 pm. Reservation George Tel 044 8018288.

The coastal stretch, through which the old steam train passes, is one of the most beautiful and diverse on the whole Garden Route. Facilities for sportive action on land and in the water are plenty. For overnight stays as well as relaxing holiday the Wilderness National Park and the idyllic Victoria Bay are recommendable.

Outeniqua Railway Museum
Opposite the station, in Mission Street lies the extensive Railway Museum of George. In a hall of 25.000 square metres well restored engines can be seen, motor coaches and carriages from different eras of the South African railway history. A must for every railway enthusiast. Opening hours: Mo-Fr 8 am -4 pm.
