Selborne Golf Estate

The Selborne Country Club lies along the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal near the village of Pennington, less than an hour from Durban. The course used to be a dairy farm, until its owner, Denis Barker, transformed it and opened it as South Africa's first golf estate in 1987. In a short while it ranged among South Africa's top 10 courses. Selborne lies amidst lush subtropical vegetation with a very rich bird life and antelopes and other game.

The course is hilly, slightly sloping towards the sea, giving wonderful views of the Indian Ocean in many places. The fairways are lined by dense shrubbery and trees, some of them palm trees. The game is challenging due to numerous water hazards laid out with finesse. Hole 3 (Par 5) is known to be the best third hole of South Africa. It requires very precise teeing off towards the fairway, which slopes downhill to the left. In front of the green a lake is situated with a tree before it. Also right behind as well as left of the green are water hazards.

Selborne is highly hospitable and offers the visitor any service. The clubhouse in the English Tudor style is elegant, with a touch of colonial charme. It has a big lounge with a bar and a restaurant, which one can't be too enthusiastic about. A fitness and wellness centre is situated on the upper floor. Selborne also offers exquisite accommodation. The rates are surprisingly moderate.
