With 6500 m the course is not very long. The fairways are planted with Kikuya grass, a pleasant ground for golf. Less pleasant, though, are the roughs and semi-roughs. There are different types of holes: long par 3 and par 4 ones as well as short ones. Hole 9 is a challenge, very long and with a dogleg to the right towards a narrow green.

Access: From the M1 direction north turn-off Houghton. At the first traffic light turn left and then right.

The Houghton Golf Club lies in the noble Johannesburg suburb of Houghton. Open since 1926, it is one of the oldest golf courses in South Africa. In 1993, Matkovich and Hayes completely revamped and redesigned it and the Gary Player Company put new bunkers in.

The Houghton Golf Course lies in softly undulating parklands with many trees. Numerous dams and ponds and beautifully flowering shrubs alongside the fairways provide an ideal habitat for birds, why the course has been proclaimed a bird sanctuary.



In 1951 and several times in the following years, the course hosted the South African Open. In 1995 the course was chosen for the inaugural "Alfred Dunhill Challenge", the most important competition in the southern hemisphere.
