Southern Right WhaleThe De Hoop Nature Reserve east of Bredasdorp is about 50.000 hectares in size and lies on a particularly attractive stretch of the coast with huge sand dunes and quiet, cliff-framed bathing bays. Walking trails lead you through the fynbos vegetation and around the Vlei. The visitor centre provides extensive information on the Southern Right Whale, since this coastal region is the mating and breeding ground of this species. At times the sea is virtually boiling with whales.
The nature park offers good hiking routes of various lengths. The Whale Hiking Trail is a highlight for passionate hiker. On the 54 kilometre long coastal trail one can explore the reserve and all its natural beauty and its rich Fynbos flora in depth. Time and again the trail leads you to picturesque bays that entice you to swim in the warm Indian Ocean.

EricaThe De Hoop Nature Reserve is a popular weekend destination for Capetonians. Some pretty chalets and a few basic camping sites (with good ablution block) are available. During the whale season from September to January the accommodation is usually fully booked, especially over weekends and during school holidays.

Game is plentiful in the nature park. You can encounter mountain zebras and several antelope species, among them Bontebok, Eland and Kudu.
